Alien Head Workshop: Teaching and Measuring
Creativity

“I am not creative!”

This is something students commonly say when coming with ideas for a project. Educators often struggle to get students to ideate because they lack creative confidence and are uncomfortable with ambiguity. In this workshop, we share a few tools that SP’s Media, Arts & Design School (MAD) and User Experience Centre (UXC) have applied to develop these skills in students and educators.

Join us as we journey into Outer Space and imagine what life out there is like. Participants will unpack the dimensions of “creativity” and how to bring about a mindset change in the classroom. We will also share a validated measurement tool that can be used to measure these mindsets.

Programme Outline:

  • Taking Off: What is creativity in your context?
  • Discovering Alien Life: What learning activities and assessments can we develop to build Creativity and Creative Confidence?
  • Off to New Adventures: Sharing about next steps to work with SP:
    • MAD’s innovation-centred curriculum and toolkits
    • UXC’s humanity-centred innovation framework and strategies
    • Further resources for educators

They are two complementary twenty-first century skills that are important to address the volatile and complex challenges facing our world today. Yet, they are often organized as distinct subjects and facilitated separately. In this workshop, come join Clement as he discusses the relationship between Design Thinking and Computational Thinking, as well as demonstrates weaving both together through a hands-on, pen and paper activity.

Facilitating Creative Insights
Empathy is a key part of the design process that can lead to creative insights. One of the best ways to gain empathy is to conduct interviews with people. However, analysing interviews can be challenging sometimes due to the large amount of data and the intuitive nature of the process. How do we increase the chance for creative sparks to happen? Learn how to facilitate the two main parts of the process – divergence and convergence and learn 4 ways to generate insight statements that inspire curiosity and action.

Experience Exactly Where Creativity and AI Converges
You will work along in an actual (short) creative process to experience exactly what AI does and does not do for you. This helps you to understand how to guide students to have AI become a true creativity boost instead of a trap of reliance. This will also give you insightful handles of how to assess learning and quality of work of your students when you integrate AI into their projects.
