Clement
Zheng
Assistant Professor | Division of Industrial Design | National University of Singapore Unravelling the Magic: Empowering Designers with DIY Electronics in STEM* STEM = Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” In today’s fast-paced technological landscape, Black box-like advanced gadgets often discourage aspiring learners from exploring their potential. NUS Interactive Materials Lab and design technologist Clement Zheng are working to revolutionise teaching of electronics and coding. This subject is usually prepared using commercial starter kits, providing a predefined path through electronic components. However, Clement will unveil his innovative approach, guiding audiences to construct a profound understanding of physical computing by creating their own electronics from scratch. Through captivating demonstrations, audiences can witness how embracing the process of making sparks a newfound passion and how it can pave the way for innovative and imaginative design solutions. |

Thriving through Ambiguity: Cultivating Mindsets for Design and Change Design thinking is a powerful approach for creatively tackling complex, human-centred challenges. Step-by-step methods and tools have been created to enable us to readily teach and learn design thinking. Nevertheless, translating this newfound knowledge into successful applications within real world context remains challenging. This is because the complexity of human-centred challenges requires design mindsets, not just acquiring knowledge, which also optimises the potential of a design thinking approach. This workshop will bring participants through a transformative process aimed at nurturing design thinking mindsets, increasing their comfort with ambiguity and uncertainty to unleash more impactful design outcomes. Co-Founder & CEO | Skilio Embracing Failure: A Stepping Stone for a Multidimensional Success As the Founder of Skilio, Felix Tan presents a compelling framework that advocates for embracing failure as a stepping stone to growth and achievement: How we inadvertently fail our young by shielding them from failure? He passionately urges educators and parents to create an environment where our young are not afraid to take risks, make mistakes, and learn from them. By cultivating a culture that normalises failure, Felix firmly believes that we can equip our young with resilience, adaptability, and the ability to navigate challenges in an ever-evolving world. Instead of a narrow view of success, Felix envisions a world where success is multidimensional, measured by an individual's unique experiences, values, and skill sets. |
